A 3D control device is a part of a 3D electronic interaction system for controlling the position and/or orientation of something in three dimensions of space, like a cursor or other virtual object.
It is handheld.
Examples include:
- Magnetic trackers from Polhemus
- Valve Index controller
- 3D pens
The most useful 3D control peripherals use linear representational action or direct action (3D direct interaction). They are naturally 3D.
Spatial input devices may use wireless spatial tracking.
In general, in 2D or 3D, a control device is an electronic device that can be used to control movement in a virtual space in a computer system.
Another example of electromagnetic 3D tracking systems are systems made by Ascension.
In a visual HCI loop, it is complemented by a visual peripheral, basically a display.
