Flock of Birds is a 3D electromagnetic tracking system from Ascension.[1]

It uses DC electromagnetic tracking.[2][3] The Flock of Birds system was the earliest popular commercial system to use DC electromagnetic tracking, and in this sense, it is pioneering.

Its update rate is up to 144 hertz. It is a 6DOF tracking system, meaning it tracks position and orientation. It supports between 1 and 4 sensors. Its tracking range is about 4 feet. Its positional accuracy is down to 0.07 inches. Its rotational accuracy is 0.5 degrees.[4]

It was originally developed for use as a head-tracking device in military applications.[3]

The Flock of Birds uses a three orthogonal antennas sensitive to DC magnetic fields as the sensor.[3]

Hardware[edit]

The internal processor is an Intel 80186 series processor.[5]

The Flock of Birds uses standard D-SUB connectors.

The Flock of Birds uses a customized power supply, an Ault SW300 with a custom connector on the end. The power supply provides the Flock of Birds three voltages: 5V, 12V, and negative 12V.
