Augmentation Research Center

Augmentation Research Center (ARC) is a concept and a physical center developed by Doug Engelbart in the 1960s. It was originally called Augmented Human Intellect Research Center (AHIRC). The core of the concept was that a group of people could increase their own group intelligence by spending at least a part of their time continually improving the knowledge-working tools that they used. The core tangible development was by using computer systems as personal interactive knowledge tools.

The concept could be applied to any group.

The first example group was at SRI and DARPA funded. It was allocated funding in 1963 by J. C. R. Licklider, the first director of the US Defense Department's Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO).
