eMagin
eMagin is an American-operations company that makes microdisplays. It is fully owned by Samsung. eMagin's microdisplays are OLED.
eMagin was sold to Samsung for about $200 million.[1]
eMagin was the first company to develop an OLED on silicon display.[2]
eMagin's strategy has been to get its silicon backplane wafers processed externally, then bring them into its facility in New York and do the OLED deposition there.[3] eMagin has claimed that it has at least once gotten backplanes from a silicon foundry in the USA.[4]
eMagin was originally founded by Gary Jones in 1992.[5]
eMagin's primary contribution is its OLED-on-silicon microdisplay technology. Many of eMagin's displays are in military products, and the information is classified.
Business partnerships[edit]
eMagin is the supplier of OLED microdisplays for the F-35 fighter jet helmet to Collins Aerospace.[6] eMagin's displays are also in the ProView SO-35.
eMagin is a supplier to THEON, providing most OLED displays used in THEON's products, including A.R.M.E.D. products.[7]
eMagin likely supplied OLED displays to Vuzix for their Tac-Eye LT monocular head-mounted display product around 2011.[8]
Products[edit]
- SVGA+ Rev2 XL[9]
- SVGA+ Rev3 XL Series, available in full color, or white monochrome, or green monochrome.[9]
- SXGA-096 OLED-XL[10]
- Z800 3DVisor
eMagin's SVGA+ is a resolution slightly larger than a standard SVGA display.[9]
History[edit]
eMagin was founded in 1992, and was originally named FED Corporation. It was founded by Gary Jones, a former engineer at Texas Instruments (TI). Prior to founding FED, Mr. Jones managed both TI's semiconductor manufacturing and research and development programs.[11] FED was an abbreviation for Field Emitter Displays, which is the type of display the company originally focused on.[12] It was based in New York. FED Corp was a manufacturer of miniature flat-panel displays. It was then legally incorporated as a Delaware corporation in 1993.[13]
Transition to OLED[edit]
The company transitioned from FEDs to OLED displays. It licensed OLED flat panel display technology from Eastman Kodak in about 1999.[12]
FED Corp's website in 1999 was at fedcorporation.com.[14]
FED Corporation acquired Virtual Vision, based in Redmond, WA, in 1998. Virtual Vision was a manufacturer of video headset systems with strong expertise in integrated optics systems.[15]
Legally, the eMagin Corporation was created through the merger of a holding company called FDC, which was organized on January 23, 1996 as a Nevada company, and FED Corporation.[16] FDC's only purpose was to be part of the reverse-merger. On March 16, 2000, FDC and FED Corporation merged, and the merged company changed its name to eMagin Corporation.
In 2001, eMagin created the world's first full-color active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) display.[17]
In 2004, Gary Jones retained his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors.[11] In 2004, Gary Jones owned about 13 percent of eMagin Corporation, and Stillwater LLC owned 20 percent.[11]
Manufacturing[edit]
eMagin's microdisplay manufacturing and R&D operations have been co-located with IBM on its campus in East Fishkill, New York.[18]
