Electromagnetic 3D tracking system characterization is a process of measuring the system inputs and outputs of an EM3D tracking system.

Tool characterization is a process in designing electromagnetic 3D tracking systems that concerns magnetic measurements of the handheld tool that has the magnetic sensor in it. It is done because the handheld controller responds differently to magnetic fields than air.[1]
