A magnetic sensor, also called a magnetometer, is a physical electronic component used in 3D-tracked head-mounted displays and controllers to do 3D tracking by measuring the strength and direction of a magnetic field. Magnetometers in consumer electronics measure a magnetic field along 3 perpendicular axises of X, Y, and Z.
In virtual and augmented reality, magnetometers are part of IMUs or alongside them inside a device.
Magnetometers can be used with permanent magnets to make a 3D tracking system.
