An optical engine is an image projector used in a near-eye display such as augmented reality glasses. Optical engines are also known as optical modules.[1]

TI sells evaluation modules with optical engines in them for their DLP line of display components.

It generally doesn't refer to a waveguide, but WaveOptics for example includes the waveguide in what they call their optical engines.[1]

Lumus sells optical engines that work with their waveguides.

An optical engine includes a display source and projection optics.

TI publishes optical engine designs in Zemax format.

Two types of display sources that can be used are LCOS and MicroLED.[2]
