Space Machine
Space Machine is a line of discontinued 3D graphics cards from Matrox.
The Space Machine line was launched in 1987. The Space Machine SM-640 was the first 3D graphics add-in board (AIB) for IBM PC/AT and Compaq-compatible clones.
The graphics boards produce solid perspective shaded images.
The cards integrated licensed technology from Silicon Graphics.
Products[edit]
- Space Machine SM-640
- Space Machine SM-1024
- Space Machine SM-1281
The cost of the Matrox SM graphics cards was approximately $5,000.
Hardware[edit]
Space Machine cards work with most 80286, 80386, and 80486 computers. The boards require two adjacent 16-bit slots.
Software[edit]
SM-1024 and SM-1281 are compatible with the Computer Aided Structural Modeling (CASM) program. Using CASM software, it allows a user to move and change building shape and structure in either solids or wireframe interactively. It gives a user the power to alter the building with a minimum delay because the graphics board calculates all the coordinate information instead of burdening the computer memory with the calculations.
