Stereoscopy has two meanings in society: The first is something 3D that is viewed using two side-by-side images, and the second is anything that is 3D in general.
The etymology of "Stereo" comes from the Greek word for solid. The inventor of stereoscopy, Charles Wheatstone, used the term "stereo" to describe how two similar images viewed with a binocular stereoscope with flat focus appear to be solid.
