Volumetric terminal

A volumetric terminal is a computer terminal that renders in 3D using a head-mounted display and 3D tracking. It receives write and delete commands from a connected computer into a volumetric buffer, and does all the matrix calculations and viewport projection within the terminal. It has an input device that specifies points in the volume and can act on them by sending actions back to the computer at those coordinates.

It may also be known as a light field terminal if it has view-dependent radiance support.

In the architecture of a volumetric terminal, the virtual camera lives inside the terminal (display device), rather than on the host application. The host defines what exists in 3D space, and the terminal device determines how it is perceived.
