XR as in the OpenXR logo

XR is a catch-all term for augmented reality and virtual reality.

XR originated from the OpenXR logo, which was meant to be a visual representation of an V and an A stacked on each other, for VR and AR. Before OpenXR, the term XR wasn't used.

In an XR system, the most important factors in order are speed of display update, the computerized system itself, and head-and-hand 3D tracking. Quality of the graphics such as having color, filled polygons, or sharpness is not as important as those three factors. Focal variety is also not as important.

Motion sickness due to latency primarily comes from the visual periphery. Vertical position tracking is not needed in AR/VR as a requirement. Computers in general act as a medium for expression. 3D computing offers an upgraded medium.
