The Z800 3D Visor is a head-mounted display from eMagin. It was made starting in the year 2005.[1]

It has a field of view of about 40 degrees diagonal for each eye.[2][3]

It uses standard PC VGA connectors for input.

It uses two of eMagin's own OLED microdisplays that were made in America.[2] Each of the displays measures 0.59 inches diagonal.[4] The displays are similar or identical to the other displays in eMagin's SVGA product line.

It has 3D rotational head-tracking.[5]

It has 800x600 resolution per eye. That's 800 horizontal by 600 vertical.[6] The refresh rate is 60hz.[7]

There is a version called the Z800 Dual that has a dual input option, meaning it has a separate left and right eye feed through VGA connectors on the video input box.[8]

Versions[edit]

  • Z800
  • Z800 Dual
  • Z800 Pro AR - an augmented reality (AR) version of the Z800 3D Visor
  • Z800 Pro AR Dual - 2X VGA input version of the Pro AR

Display input[edit]

The Z800 may work with:

  • 800x600@60hz, 75hz, or 85hz (doesn't support 70, 72, or 100hz).[9]
  • 1024x768@85hz (doesn't support 60hz), and does not scale the image, you only see a portion.
  • 1280x1024@85hz (same effect as 1024x768).
  • Does not show 680x480 using any refresh rate.

User interface[edit]

The Z800 has on-screen display adjustments.[10]

Software support[edit]

Z800 configuration requires Windows drivers.[11]

The Z800 goes to sleep every 5 minutes if on USB power if using a VGA input but not running the eMagin windows software.[9] The Z800 sleeps every 10 minutes on Windows when using the software. this is called standby mode.

The AC power supply supplies 5V DC. When using the adapter instead of USB power, standby is 150 minutes. The z800 3DVisor breakout box uses a 2.5mm by 5.5mm barrel jack. It can be powered from the same power supply as a Polhemus Patriot. Its expected peak power consumption is 0.3 amps at 5 volts.
